Making a Difference for Dominic

Dominic lives with cerebral palsy and requires a wheelchair or walker to get around. He shares a small, two-story house with his mother, father, and two older brothers. Getting to his bedroom upstairs has become more difficult as he's gotten older. His mother was desperately seeking solutions. Joe Scullin, Community Social Services Director at United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia happily helped her find one.

Best Friends at UCP's Best Friends

At Chestnut Hill Academy, community service is a way for students to experience and shape the world around them. Over the past 20 years, many young men have used this an opportunity to volunteer with UCP's Best Friends program. The boys come once a week to read stories, help with lunch, and play with the kids. This year, Nick and Desmond — both eighth graders — are spending time at Best Friends. They're both familiar faces in the program, having volunteered before. But their reasons for returning to Best Friends are unique.

Introducing UCP Motor Cars

We're sure many of you are familiar with our two signature events: Motor Cars Under the Stars and The Fantasy Auction. This year begins a new era for our organization, we have decided to merge these two events together to create UCP Motor Cars. This year's event is scheduled for Friday, June 24, 2011 at Aronimink Golf Club and will feature a collection of classic automobiles curated by internationally recognized photographer Michael Furman. The evening will also include fabulous hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, carving stations, dinner and decadent desserts as well as live and silent auctions, live music and dancing.

We will be recognizing Pat Ciarrocchi of CBS 3 with the UCP Life Without Limits award for her legacy of caring and generosity of spirit for persons living with disabilities. William J. Avery will serve as the evening's Honorary Chair.

UCP's Best Friends Achieves NAEYC Accreditation

United Cerebral Palsy is pleased to announce that our Best Friends program has received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This is a distinguished honor based on a voluntary accreditation system of professional standards for early childhood education programs.

Best Friends was commended for its curriculum, its ongoing assessment approaches to understanding children's learning and development and its commitment to protecting the health of children and staff while building strong relationships to help children and families achieve their goals.

Congratulations to the administration, teaching staff, Jodi Miscannon Director of Children's Services and all Best Friends' families. Earning this accreditation was a shared effort and success. We're all very proud.

All-Star Labor Classic Raises Over $100,000 For UCP

On Sunday, April 3, 2011, United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia & Vicinity and its organized labor partners hosted the 24th Annual All-Star Labor Classic. Held at La Salle University's Tom Gola Arena, this year's tournament showcased many of our region's best high school senior basketball players and raised more than $100,000 for United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia & Vicinity's services. It was a competitive day of basketball, beginning with an exhibition between the media and organized labor. In tournament play, the Girls tipped off first, followed by the Boys. The City Girls beat the Suburban Girls with a score of 84-82, and the Suburban Boys outscored the City Boys 114-111.

Brickman Group Gives Back to UCP

The Brickman Group is one the largest landscape design and build companies in the country. Throughout its history, it has celebrated a holiday tradition of doing something special for people who were less fortunate. Seven years ago, when Brickman opened in Philadelphia, it selected United Cerebral Palsy as its local beneficiary based on an employee's personal experience.

HMS School taking its 4th lap in the UCP 5K

For the fourth consecutive year, HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy fielded a team for the UCP 5K. More than 100 students, staff, families, “friends,” and alumni completed the course along Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
