Motor Cars Under the Stars Was Electric!
A little rain didn’t dampen the excitement of the 10th Annual Motor Cars Under the Stars on June 18 at the Franklin Institute.
Optimizing the grandeur of the magnificent Franklin Institute steps, curator Michael Furman orchestrated the first classic car parade presented during the cocktail hour. Guests, in spite of the raindrops, crowded at the top of the steps to view the classic automobiles. What a spectacular sight to see, one-by-one turning the corner from Race Street onto 20th Street, vintage cars such as our featured poster car, a 1939 Delahaye 135 M Roadster by Figoni & Falaschi, a 1957 Dual Ghia Convertible, a 1962 Bentley S2 Continental Drop Head Coupe by Mulliner-Park Ward, a 1930 Packard 745 Dual Cowl Phaeton, or a 2008 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, presented by Motor Cars Under the Stars founder Ken Catanella, Philadelphia PA.
The Franklin Institute offered an elegant yet playful backdrop for the annual event. Guests mingled and explored the exhibits such as Bioscience, Changing Earth, and Electricity while visiting the silent auction tables and competitively bidding on trips, jewelry, sports memorabilia, artwork, and more. The friendly competition was electric.
Chris May, Bob Kelly, and Erika von Tiehl of CBS3, once again hosted this year’s program, during which the honoree recipients were presented with their awards. James F. Kenney, Philadelphia City Councilman-at-Large, was presented with the 2013 Life Without Limits Award. William J. Avery received the first UCP Excellence Award for his years of service and dedication. Bob Kelly worked his magic and lit up the room with excitement as he managed the bidding of the live auction packages. This year a special auction item was introduced for bid, a unique painting created by the UCP Weekend and Evening Program adult clients. This addition reminds us of the mission of UCP and the talented special people we serve.
Wrapping up the event, guests were dazzled and charmed by the talented Milan 77 Band, bringing a perfect close to a great evening.
The success of the 2013 Motor Cars Under the Stars was due to the tireless dedication and commitment of the talented committee. Many thanks and admiration extends to: event chairs Karen & Stewart Cohen, auction chairs Stephanie Gambone & Kathleen King, curator Michael Furman, Joanne Calabria, Dorothy Campbell, Andrea D’Andrea, Joyce & Sheldon Eveloff, Shane Fartside, Jon Hitchcock, Doris Langerman, Joseph Malott, Julie & Allan Nappen, Margo Orlin, Audrey Poe, and Judy Rogers.
Congratulations to all! Stay tuned for the announcement for 2014!
