MADISON & HER FAMILY

Madison is a graduate of UCP Best Friends early childhood program. Due to complications during birth, she was born with cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and limited verbal communication skills. She received early intervention services at UCP and when she turned five, although old enough to enter kindergarten, her parents decided to keep her at UCP for an additional year, an option available to children with special needs.

Madison's sister Ashley, who is seven years older, has participated in UCP's sibling support outreach efforts. She joined a panel discussion where she shared her experience growing up with Madison. While the two girls are very close, she acknowledged that at times, she has been frustrated by the amount of attention the family must devote to Madison's needs.

Madison and Ashley enjoy spending time together. On some mornings, Madison will go in and wake her sister up so they can watch a favorite program together in Ashley's bed. They both enjoy swimming and play together in the pool. When their mother watches them in the water, she is amazed to see the freedom in her younger daughter's movements.

Madison is now in elementary school. From time to time, her parents have turned to UCP's Community Social Services department with questions about how to obtain the services Madison needs. UCP has helped them advocate for there to be a "one-on-one" aid in the classroom with Madison, which helps her focus on learning. This support has had a big impact on her success at school. For Madison and her family, UCP is a valued resource. In fact, her mom believes that as long as the services are available, Madison could very well return to UCP as an adult.
