Fiona is a recent graduate from UCP Best Friends early childhood program. She was born in China where she spent her first 9 1/2 months in an orphanage. Fiona appeared to be different than the other children at the orphanage who were all around the same age. According to her mom, Fiona "was unable to hold her head up. She could not hold a toy or eat anything but baby food."
Her parents left China believing that Fiona's development had been delayed because of her months at the orphanage. They soon learned from a doctor in the States that Fiona had special needs. She has cerebral palsy, which has affected her physically, but not intellectually, and according to her mom, Fiona has a vast imagination. It is difficult for her to form words correctly due to limited muscle control. Her words come out unclear, sometimes making her difficult to understand.
Fiona and her younger brother Ian are 14 months apart. Although she is no longer at UCP, at 4 years old, Ian now attends UCP Best Friends. Due to some developmental delays, he receives therapy and learning support at UCP. His mom thinks he is making such progress, and that he may not need any therapy by the time he is in kindergarten.
