UCP provides a support group for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities. The group meets monthly to discuss the issues and feelings that are related to raising a child with special needs. Parent Support Group meetings are facilitated by a licensed social worker. Childcare is available upon request.
At UCP, we know that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs has its rewards and challenges, and that connecting with other kids who have similar experiences can be a very positive experience for them. UCP's Sibling Support Group is open to children who are 6-12 years old with a brother or sister who has a disability. The group meets monthly and follows the curriculum of the widely known Sibshop model. Siblings are encouraged to share similar experiences, problem solve with each other, and have fun! Group members participate in a variety of interactive activities, such as role play, art and writing, and eating pizza. There is no fee to participate in the Sibling Support Group.
UCP Best Friends has a growing, active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), consisting of two subcommittees. The social committee assists in the planning of events such as potluck dinners, a Thanksgiving brunch, and Teacher Appreciation Day. The fundraising committee assists with the planning and timing of fundraisers and helps procure "Wish List" items. In addition, quarterly meetings are scheduled to discuss topics that are important to families, such as nutrition and transitions.
