ARTHUR & BETH

Arthur, also known as Art or Artie, is in his fifties and uses a wheelchair. He is a resident in one of UCP’s Community Living Arrangements and comes to UCP’s Adult Training program during the day. In addition to cerebral palsy and visual impairments, scoliosis has limited his ability to maneuver his chair on his own. As he has gotten older, he has come to rely more and more on staff for his mobility. UCP Occupational Therapist, Beth Loving, recommended that Arthur try a power assisted chair. A cross between a manual chair and a battery operated chair, one power-assisted push, propels the chair the distance of three wheel rotations. Arthur instantly increased the distance his arms could take him. Arthur and Beth worked together to learn the ins and outs of his new chair which has given him a chance to move around more independently.
